A Tribute to the Fjords
A Norwegian embraces national romanticism
A majestic tribute to a majestic phenomenon I've only seen in pictures.
Composer's Comment
My second stand-alone original composition. I spent a lot of time on this one. It also happens to be the first original composition made using editing software on my computer instead of the built-in MIDI sequencing capabilities of my keyboard, allowing me to try out many tricks previously inaccessible to me. Examples include the tempo ramps, instruments fading in or out, panning sliding, controlled pitch bend and the ability to easily edit existing notes. I think all these factors really help raise the quality noticeably between this and the previous composition.
As for the melody and composition itself, I was inspired by a book called "100 Great Wonders of the World", which has some great pictures of places around the world. I've always liked to imagine myself being different places or playing different games and create music based on what I imagined, so this book was good at capturing my imagination. In fact, it is still sitting in my bookshelf, just in case I want to create something while not really feeling it.
Other than that, I think I captured the fjords pretty well. I'm also quite happy with the dynamics. The instruments may be playing too far from their usual register, especially towards the end, and mixing could still use some work, but I grew tired of the composition and just wanted to be done with it. I guess that's likely to happen when you spend a good chunk of your summer on something.
